Certificate Course in Empowering Women in Politics 2016/17 was Started on 9th July 2016


The University of Peradeniya with the generous support given by the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Child Development and the National Committee for Women, conducted the inauguration of the Certificate Course in Empowering Women in Politics - 2016/17, at the gender Education and Women's Initiative Unit, Department of Agriculture Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, on the 9th July, 2016. Prof. Upul Dissanayake , the Vice-Chancellor, Ms. Swarna Sumanasekara, the Chairperson, National Committee on Women, Ms. Anula Indrani, the executive Director, Prof. Gamini Pushpakumara, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, the Director, Post Graduate Institute of Humanities & Social Sciences, Dr. Wijaya Jayathilake, the Head, Department of Agriculture Extension and coordinator of the gender Education and Women's Initiative Unit, and Prof. Kamala Liyanage, Senior Professor in Political Science, who has taken the initiative to offer this program attended the inaugural session. There were around 120 participants, including students and academic staff members of the University. Dr. Jayathilake welcomed the participants and Prof. Liyanage explained the objective of the certificate course. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof.Upul B. Dissanayake, Prof. Pushpakumara and Ms. Sumanasekara also addressed the gathering. The courses such as concept of gender, feminist explanation in politics, women's rights and women and Law, women leadership building and empowerment, the constitution and government of Sri Lanka and Democracy and governance will be offered under this course from the 16th July 2016 to 7th January 2017, at the Department of Agriculture Extension. Moreover the participants of the programme will have to work in a relevant political office as an intern to gain some exposure. This course is coordinated by Prof. Kamala Liyanage, Dr. Wijaya jayathilake and Ms. Shobana Rajendran.
