Department of English Language Teaching

The English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) at the Faculty of Agriculture is a sub-unit of the Department of English Language Teaching at the University of Peradeniya. Established in 1985, the ELTU has evolved into a unit that is equipped to cater to the contemporary learning needs of undergraduates with highly skilled staff. The ELTU offers a diverse range of English language programmes designed to help students at the Faculty enhance their English language skills. Presently, the ELTU offers two courses to the students at the Faculty: The Intensive Course in English and the On-going Course in English. The Intensive Course in English is a supplementary course offered to new entrants to the Faculty. It employs a dynamic, student-centered approach to teaching and learning, incorporating a variety of entertaining programmes in English. Students who successfully complete the course demonstrate marked improvement in their English language proficiency.
The On-going Course in English is designed for first and second-year undergraduates at the Faculty. Currently offered in three semesters, this course aims to further enhance students' English language competency through an interactive and engaging pedagogical approach. The ELTU uses a systematic assessment process to evaluate students' language skills in all four major language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
In addition to its regular classes for undergraduates at the Faculty, the ELTU conducts support classes for internationally competitive examinations in English, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). These classes help students to excel in global academic and professional contexts by providing them with comprehensive training and practice in these internationally recognized tests.
Additionally, the unit offers professional English courses that cater to the specific needs of the students in various fields of study. This demonstrates the ELTU's commitment to promoting cultural exchange, fostering a diverse learning environment, and ensuring its students are well-prepared to excel both academically and professionally.
