Gender Education & Women's Initiative Unit (GEWIU) is one of the most outstanding units in the Department of Agricultural Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya which has been established in 1995 according to the concept of honorable Dr. Wijaya Jayathilaka. At present, it has made up to a reputable position with the completion of numerous succeeded projects to provide gender education and women initiative training programs, especially to meet the specified needs of undergraduates, in agriculture as well as other disciplines, trainers, and other resource persons outside the university and to help them develop their skills to become better achievers. It also provides a place for women to meet, exchange ideas and take initiatives to find solutions to special problems they face in their chosen training programs or careers. It is for all interested persons, and for those who want to benefit from the resources and expertise developed and networked through the unit.
A space in the Agriculture Library was assigned to the Gender Education and Women's Initiative Unit (GEWIU). GEWIU received generous funding from NORAD. Funding was managed by the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA). This project should initiate work to improve gender sensitivity and inclusion in both faculty and university levels. The work of the unit continues to be closely linked to the teaching of the EX4107 Gender Issues in Development and EX5107 Gender and Development courses offered by the PGIA. The awarding Ceremony of the "Genero Creative Expressions 2023" organized by the Gender Education and Women's Initiative Unit (GEWIU), Department of Agricultural Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya was held on 27th June 2023 at the Media Incubator Space, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.
The invited guests were the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Sarath Kodithuwakku, and the Former Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and the founder of the GEWIU, Dr. Vijaya Jayathilaka. Out of over 100 submissions, 28 winners were recognized across three categories: Poems, Short Stories, and Memes awarded. These outstanding contributions were selected separately in three languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
Genero Creative Expressions 2023 had been opened for the undergraduates of the University of Peradeniya based on the theme ‘Gender and Society’ to educate and improve awareness about gender-based diversity, and fundamental values of gender and to reveal the gender-related problems within the society.

“Genero CE - 2023” is the Poems, Short Stories and Memes competition. All the interested students of University of Peradeniya are invited to participate at the “Genero CE - 2023”, the creativity competition in Sinhala, Tamil and English media. First, second and third places of each category in each medium will be selected by a panel of judges. The most popular entry of each category will be selected based on Facebook votes. The Gender Education and Women's Initiative Unit, Department of Agricultural Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, conducted the annual Genero debate competition 2k22 to educate university undergraduates about gender diversity and gender-based equality. A total of eight teams representing all four years of students in the faculty of Agriculture participated in the competition. The competition was conducted over seven days in three separate rounds. The final event was held at Appadurei hall, Post graduate institute of Agriculture on 28th October 2022.
The Championship was won by Team Elites from 20th batch members of Senuri Diyathma Kandamulla, N.M.R.G.R. Nawela, R.D.Rihini Punma Chanduni, and W.M.Ovini Parindya Wijesooriya. Team Omega from the 16 batch bagged second place in the debate competition. Hashini Hathurusinghe from team Omega was prized as the best speaker of the final debate. Dr. Wijaya Jayathilake, Founder of the Gender and Women's Initiative Unit was invited as the guest of honor in the final event. Dr. Wijaya Jayathilake conducted a valuable speech for students about concepts in gender education. All the competitors and the winners were recognized and prized at the end of the event.
A special discussion and workshop for Undergraduate students on ‘Acceptance of Diversity’ was held on the 9th of September at the Incubator Space, University of Peradeniya, from 9.00 a.m. onwards. It was conducted under the theme; WE ARE FREE TO BE DIFFERENT by Dr. Nishadi Somarathne, Consultant, Gender and Inclusive Development. At the workshop, Dr. Nishadi discussed diversity acceptance and its role in the society in undergraduates’ context for equalizing the difference. Final year students were exclusively welcomed for the workshop, but more than 40 students participated from the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Management,. Gender Education and Women Initiative Unit (GEWIU) Of Department of Agricultural Extension, Faculty of Agriculture organized a certificate course for Aspiring Female Political Leaders collaborating with the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs Sri Lanka. The certificate course was composed of 7 modules; Concept of Gender and Feminist Approaches to politics, Human rights and women, Women and politics, Women and law, Women empowerment and leadership, Constitution and government in Sri Lanka, and Democracy and governance. The certificate course was conducted in 3 phases. Third phase was started in November 2019 and 38 participants fulfilled the requirements to achieve the certificate at the closing ceremony which was held on 22nd December 2021 at the R.R. Appadurai Auditorium, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.Read More
