The Society of Animal Science at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, proudly hosted the "World Egg Day Celebration 2024" on October 11, 2024. This hybrid event, conducted both online and in-person at the Department of Animal Science, aimed to raise awareness about the nutritional value of eggs and promote innovations related to this essential food source.
The celebration began with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, symbolizing a day dedicated to knowledge, creativity, and engagement. Following this ceremony, Professor Sarath Kodithuwakku, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, officially welcomed attendees, outlining the event's objectives and providing a comprehensive overview of its purpose. The gathering featured addresses from several distinguished guests, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Professor Terrance Madhujith, and Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health. Their insightful speeches set a positive tone for the day. The event was further graced by Professor Ranjith Pallegama, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, alongside academic and non-academic staff, industry partners, and students.

The celebration also featured a photography competition followed by a videography competition, with winners recognized for their creativity and talent through prizes and certificates. To further engage the community, undergraduate students performed a street drama highlighting the nutritional benefits of eggs. Additionally, two informative videos were screened to address common myths and misconceptions about eggs. The event also introduced new Omega-3 enriched eggs from CIC Feed Pvt. Ltd., emphasizing the commitment of the Society of Animal Science and the Sri Lanka Association of Animal Production to promoting healthy and nutritious food options.

Throughout the day, students showcased their culinary skills by preparing innovative egg-based dishes for guests to enjoy during breakfast and throughout the event. Souvenirs created by students were presented to sponsors as tokens of appreciation.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by the Secretary, Society of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the celebration's success. This occasion marked a memorable day filled with learning, creativity, and meaningful interactions among over 300 participants.
