Having commenced in 1948, the Faculty of Agriculture was established as a fully-fledged Faculty in 1972. The Faculty has gone through a continuous and a series of transformations, and curriculum revisions, making it the leading higher education institution in agriculture in the country. It has also grown to be the center of excellence in the region. The Faculty is currently providing world class training in Agriculture and Allied Sciences, and offers three degree programs:
Bachelor of Agricultural Technology and Management.
Bachelor of Food Science and Technology.
Bachelor of Animal Science and Fisheries.

University of Illinois ACES Global Academy Visits Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya
The 2025 ACES Global Academy from the University of Illinois made a meaningful and impactful visit to Sri Lanka this year, with the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, proudly serving as the key partner and host institution. A distinguished delegation of nine professors from the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) visited the Faculty on the 26th and 27th of
May 2025.
The delegation participated in a series of academic and experiential activities designed to foster international collaboration in agricultural research, education, and outreach. Their visit to Peradeniya is part of the Academy’s commitment to building strategic global partnerships and expanding scholarly impact through immersion experiences.
During their stay, the group engaged in joint discussions with faculty members, explored ongoing research initiatives, and visited local agricultural sites to better understand Sri Lanka’s unique agro-ecological systems.
This visit marks a significant step in strengthening institutional ties between the University of Illinois and the University of Peradeniya, paving the way for future collaborations in teaching, research, and extension.

Indeewari 2025 (May 21, 2025)
The undergraduates of the faculty of Agriculture, annually organize the musical extravaganza, 'Indeewari' with the support of the university and the faculty community. It is organized with the aim of raising funds for the Needy Students’ Scholarship which benefits over 100 faculty students in need of financial assistance. In addition, funds are allocated for ‘Reli Bimen Sama Bimata’ educational program which assists school children in rural areas. Indeewari 2025 will be held on the 21st of May 2025 which would be performed by Umara, Athula, Bachi & Infinity Band. The show would be held in the University Gymnasium from 7 pm onwards.

World Bee Day 2025 Celebrated at the University of Peradeniya
The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, proudly hosted a vibrant celebration of World Bee Day 2025 on 25th May 2025 at the Diamond Jubilee Hall.
Organised by the beePERA Student Society in collaboration with the Bee Protection Organisation – Kandy, the event brought together students, academics, and environmental enthusiasts to raise awareness on the crucial role of bees in sustaining biodiversity, food security, and ecological balance. Under the theme “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us”, the program featured informative talks, exhibitions, and interactive sessions that inspired action toward pollinator conservation. We thank all participants and collaborators for making this event a resounding success and for helping to create a buzz for a better planet!

Faculty of Agriculture Celebrates its Diamond Jubilee
The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, celebrated its 75th anniversary on July 4, 2023. The event was held at the Animal Science Auditorium in Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. The event was attended by faculty members, students, alumni, and other dignitaries.
The logo for the Diamond Jubilee celebration was designed by Pamodha Chathumal of the 2017/18 batch.

The Championship of the Agriculture Premier League 2023
The Faculty Cricket team has won the Championship of the Agriculture Premier League 2023 which was held during 1st to 2nd April 2023 at Makandura Premises, Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, over seven agriculture faculties in the island.

"CropLife Sri Lanka" Donates Pesticide Formulation Samples to the Faculty of Agriculture
CropLife Sri Lanka (CLSL), a leading plant science organization, donated pesticide formulation samples and an awareness poster to the University of Peradeniya's Faculty of Agriculture on July 15th, 2024. This initiative by CLSL's Regulatory Committee and Research & Development Circle aims to enhance student learning. The donation included Pesticide formulation samples that are crucial for practical sessions in undergraduate and MSc programmes at the Faculty and Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and an awareness poster which will enhance the knowledge of students on the importance and use of various pesticide formulations in agriculture.
The Faculty of Agriculture expressed its sincere thanks for the donation, acknowledging its valuable contribution to its educational programmes.

The visit of the Prof. Keith Ho and Dr. Deng Wenjing from the Education University of Hong Kong
Prof. Keith Ho and Dr. Deng Wenjing from the Education University of Hong Kong visited the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya on 10th September, 2024. During their visit they met with the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Sarath Kodituwakku, and the Head of the Department and the staff of the Department of Soil Science and discussed potential collaborations in research and teaching programs.
Prof. Ho is the head of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies in the Education University of Hong Kong and Dr. Deng is an Associate Professor of the same department. They are experts in environmental toxicology related research. Their research programs on indoor air quality assessments have contributed a lot to develop policies and guidelines in Hong Kong to assure a good quality environment in schools.
Their purpose of visit to Sri Lanka was to attend the indoor air quality (IAQ) awareness program that they were co-coordinating with Prof. Warshi S. Dandeniya of the Department of Soil Science, aiming to increase awareness among school children on IAQ and its importance for health.

School Indoor Air Quality Education Program
The sessions were conducted in the months of August and September of 2024 with the participation of 605 students from 25 schools, 50 teachers and 12 officers of CEA. The CEA supported the program for Environment Pioneers (student volunteers working with CEA) from selected schools in Kegalle and Rathnapura Districts (9 and 12 schools, respectively). Sessions in Kandy district were conducted at Swarnamali College, Hemamali College, Sylvester's College and Trinity College. A group of undergraduate students supported the activities by serving as Program Assistants. The program conducted at each school consisted of a seminar, discussion sessions and practical on IAQ monitoring. Teaching and learning materials developed by Dr. Deng and her team for the school programs in Hong Kong were used during the program conducted in Sri Lanka.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Deng Wenjing from EDUHK, Prof. Keith Ho Wing-kei from EDUHK and Prof. Warshi S. Dandeniya from the Department of Soil Science of University of Peradeniya.

World Egg Day Celebration 2024!
On October 11, 2024, the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya proudly celebrated World Egg Day, hosted by the Department of Animal Science and the Society of Animal Science. Chief guests included Vice-Chancellor Prof. Terrance Madhujith, Dr. Hemali Kothalawala from the Department of Animal Production and Health, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ranjith Pallegama, who all highlighted the importance of eggs in human nutrition.
The event featured expert talks, interactive sessions, and a photo and video competition, with winners celebrating the versatility of eggs. Attendees enjoyed creative, egg-based culinary treats and a street drama busting common egg myths. The event also explored future egg fortification possibilities to boost nutritional value.

Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya provides Leadership to the Food Flow Mapping in Sri Lanka with the support of FAO and IWMI
The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, led a comprehensive food flow mapping project for seven commodities—paddy/rice, maize, potato, beans, banana, chicken meat, and marine fish—across the 25 districts of Sri Lanka. The summary of the study is detailed in a technical report focusing on the Colombo City Region Food System. The outcome of the study will support policymakers in enhancing food quality, affordability, and efficiency by reducing food miles and losses. Prof. Buddhi Marambe led the project involving multiple universities, the Department of Agriculture, FAO, and IWMI. It analyzed food flow adjustments during COVID-19 and under climate change. Financial support from FAO’s “City Region Food Systems Programme” and IWMI's "Data analysis and food flow mapping across 25 administrative districts in Sri Lanka" enabled in-depth data collection and analysis, with a full report covering all districts currently in preparation.
