Cargills Dairies (Pvt.) Ltd. generously donated four laptop computers to the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, to support teaching, research, and student learning activities.
The donation was formally handed over to Dean, Faculty of Agriculture on 2 January 2026 at the Faculty of Agriculture. Representing Cargills Dairies (Pvt.) Ltd., Mr. Crishantha Kumarage, Mr. Uditha Dissanayake, and Mr. D.C. Kumarage participated in the event.
From the University of Peradeniya, the event was attended by Professor B.C. Jayawardana, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Pradeepa Silva, Professor J.K. Vidanarachchi, who facilitated the collaboration between the University of Peradeniya and Cargills Quality Dairies, and Professor Sarath Kodithuwakku of the Faculty of Agriculture.
The donated laptop computers will be utilized to strengthen academic instruction, postgraduate and undergraduate research activities, and capacity building within the Department of Animal Science. This contribution reflects Cargills Dairies’ continued commitment to supporting higher education, research excellence, and industry-academia collaboration in Sri Lanka.
The Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Animal Science sincerely appreciate this valuable contribution and look forward to further strengthening partnerships with industry stakeholders for the advancement of education and research.

On August 6, 2025, the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya met with Dr. Patrick McNamara, Executive Director of the United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission, to discuss educational partnerships. He spoke with Dean Prof. Barana Jayawardena, Prof. Venura Herath, and Dr. Wikum Jayasinghe about scholarship opportunities for both Sri Lankan and American citizens. Dr. McNamara highlighted the Commission's long history since its founding in 1952, noting that over 2,000 participants have benefited from its programs. He emphasized that Fulbright's mission is for alumni to "give back" to their home countries, a principle that aligns with the Faculty of Agriculture's goal of knowledge transfer and community engagement.
The discussion also covered the merit-based application process. Dr. McNamara outlined opportunities for faculty to host visiting scholars, suggesting that U.S. Fulbright Specialists could help in the professional development of junior lecturers. He mentioned a planned Colloquium in January 2026 for early-career academics in engineering and entrepreneurship, co-sponsored by the Universities of Peradeniya, Jaffna, and Kelaniya. The faculty expressed a strong desire to develop these collaborations. This meeting is a key step toward expanding the international profile of the university. Dr. McNamara is scheduled to return on August 27, 2025, to lecture to the entire university community.

The China–Sri Lanka Belt and Road Joint Laboratory of Tea Green Prevention and Control Technology reached a key milestone with the Guizhou University PhD/MSc Full Scholarship Awarding Ceremony, held on 20th August 2025 at the Board Room, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.
The ceremony was graced by Prof. Terance Madujith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, as the Chief Guest. Dr. W. M. Wishwajith W. Kandegama, Secretary General of the China–Sri Lanka Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Green Plant Protection, delivered the opening remarks, followed by an address by Prof. Barana Jayawardane, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture.
A total of 30 outstanding Sri Lankan students were awarded full scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies (PhD and MSc) at Guizhou University, China. The awards mark a significant opportunity for young scholars to contribute to advanced research while strengthening academic ties between the two countries.
The programme not only celebrated the achievements of the scholarship recipients but also reinforced the growing collaboration between Sri Lanka and China in higher education and green plant protection technologies.
The event was attended by several distinguished academics, including Prof. S. A. C. N. Perera, Head of the Department of Agricultural Biology; Prof. J. P. Eeswara, Head of the Department of Crop Science; Prof. Pradeepa C. G. Bandaranayake, Director of the Agricultural Biotechnology Centre; and Dr. W. H. Jayasinghe, Director of the Agriculture Education Unit.

The Prabudda Art Circle of the Faculty of Agriculture very successfully hosted the මියැසි පැදුර 2025 musical evening on September 10, 2025, from 6.00 p.m. onwards at the faculty premises. The event brought students and staff of the faculty together for an evening filled with music and good vibes.
The night featured amazing performances by students from the faculty. With every song, the audience joined in the rhythm, making the evening more colorful and memorable. The event ended on a high note, leaving everyone with smiles and great memories. The happiness and energy of the evening truly reflected the spirit of our Prabuddha Art Circle.
මියැසි පැදුර (Miyesi Pedura) is one of the annual cultural events organized and conducted by the Prabuddha Art Circle, and it has become a tradition that everyone looks forward to it always. Therefore, we say, “until we meet with the මියැසි පැදුර 2026 in next year”, take care.

The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, celebrated its 75th anniversary on July 4, 2023. The event was held at the Animal Science Auditorium in Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. The event was attended by faculty members, students, alumni, and other dignitaries.
The logo for the Diamond Jubilee celebration was designed by Pamodha Chathumal of the 2017/18 batch.

The undergraduates of the faculty of Agriculture, annually organize the musical extravaganza, 'Indeewari' with the support of the university and the faculty community. It is organized with the aim of raising funds for the Needy Students’ Scholarship which benefits over 100 faculty students in need of financial assistance. In addition, funds are allocated for ‘Reli Bimen Sama Bimata’ educational program which assists school children in rural areas. Indeewari 2025 will be held on the 21st of May 2025 which would be performed by Umara, Athula, Bachi & Infinity Band. The show would be held in the University Gymnasium from 7 pm onwards.

Prof. Keith Ho and Dr. Deng Wenjing from the Education University of Hong Kong visited the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya on 10th September, 2024. During their visit they met with the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Sarath Kodituwakku, and the Head of the Department and the staff of the Department of Soil Science and discussed potential collaborations in research and teaching programs.
Prof. Ho is the head of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies in the Education University of Hong Kong and Dr. Deng is an Associate Professor of the same department. They are experts in environmental toxicology related research. Their research programs on indoor air quality assessments have contributed a lot to develop policies and guidelines in Hong Kong to assure a good quality environment in schools.
Their purpose of visit to Sri Lanka was to attend the indoor air quality (IAQ) awareness program that they were co-coordinating with Prof. Warshi S. Dandeniya of the Department of Soil Science, aiming to increase awareness among school children on IAQ and its importance for health.

The sessions were conducted in the months of August and September of 2024 with the participation of 605 students from 25 schools, 50 teachers and 12 officers of CEA. The CEA supported the program for Environment Pioneers (student volunteers working with CEA) from selected schools in Kegalle and Rathnapura Districts (9 and 12 schools, respectively). Sessions in Kandy district were conducted at Swarnamali College, Hemamali College, Sylvester's College and Trinity College. A group of undergraduate students supported the activities by serving as Program Assistants. The program conducted at each school consisted of a seminar, discussion sessions and practical on IAQ monitoring. Teaching and learning materials developed by Dr. Deng and her team for the school programs in Hong Kong were used during the program conducted in Sri Lanka.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Deng Wenjing from EDUHK, Prof. Keith Ho Wing-kei from EDUHK and Prof. Warshi S. Dandeniya from the Department of Soil Science of University of Peradeniya.

On October 11, 2024, the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya proudly celebrated World Egg Day, hosted by the Department of Animal Science and the Society of Animal Science. Chief guests included Vice-Chancellor Prof. Terrance Madhujith, Dr. Hemali Kothalawala from the Department of Animal Production and Health, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ranjith Pallegama, who all highlighted the importance of eggs in human nutrition.
The event featured expert talks, interactive sessions, and a photo and video competition, with winners celebrating the versatility of eggs. Attendees enjoyed creative, egg-based culinary treats and a street drama busting common egg myths. The event also explored future egg fortification possibilities to boost nutritional value.
Special thanks to the Sri Lanka Association of Animal Production, Switz Lanka, CIC Feeds, Browns Veterinary Pharmaceuticals, Nel Farm, and the All Island Egg Producers’ Association for their support in making the event a success!

The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, led a comprehensive food flow mapping project for seven commodities—paddy/rice, maize, potato, beans, banana, chicken meat, and marine fish—across the 25 districts of Sri Lanka. The summary of the study is detailed in a technical report focusing on the Colombo City Region Food System. The outcome of the study will support policymakers in enhancing food quality, affordability, and efficiency by reducing food miles and losses. Prof. Buddhi Marambe led the project involving multiple universities, the Department of Agriculture, FAO, and IWMI. It analyzed food flow adjustments during COVID-19 and under climate change. Financial support from FAO’s “City Region Food Systems Programme” and IWMI's "Data analysis and food flow mapping across 25 administrative districts in Sri Lanka" enabled in-depth data collection and analysis, with a full report covering all districts currently in preparation.

The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, proudly hosted a vibrant celebration of World Bee Day 2025 on 25th May 2025 at the Diamond Jubilee Hall.
Organised by the beePERA Student Society in collaboration with the Bee Protection Organisation – Kandy, the event brought together students, academics, and environmental enthusiasts to raise awareness on the crucial role of bees in sustaining biodiversity, food security, and ecological balance. Under the theme “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us”, the program featured informative talks, exhibitions, and interactive sessions that inspired action toward pollinator conservation. We thank all participants and collaborators for making this event a resounding success and for helping to create a buzz for a better planet!

The Library Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture is pleased to announce that the Library Open Day – 2025 will be held for the second consecutive year on Wednesday, 16th July 2025, commencing at 10.00 a.m. at the Appadurai Auditorium, Faculty of Agriculture.
The primary objective of this event is to raise awareness among Advanced Level Biology students regarding the extensive resources available at the Agriculture Library and to demonstrate how these resources can be effectively utilized to support their higher education pursuits in the field of Agriculture. Furthermore, the program will provide a brief overview of the Faculty of Agriculture to the participating students. Ten students following the Biology stream from twelve schools within the Kandy Municipal area, along with two Biology teachers from each school, have been invited to participate in the program. The event will be graced by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, the Librarian of the University of Peradeniya, as well as academic and non-academic staff members of the Library and the Faculty of Agriculture. The program will include an interactive guided tour of the library, an inter-school quiz competition, and several other activities. Furthermore, a motivational speech will be delivered to the students by Senior Professor Buddhi Marambe, an eminent academic in the field of Crop Science.
