For people who are engaged in strenuous physical exercise, isotonic sports beverages are introduced to the market to aid in their strength recovery. Isotonic beverages fall under the category of functional drinks. It is a relatively recent product category in the domestic market. These beverages are typically consumed
during or after exercises to prevent or postpone the body's carbohydrate stores from being depleted and the start of dehydration.

Even though the global industry has grown significantly, there is a big unmet demand locally for isotonic sports drinks. In this study, innovative isotonic formulae have been developed to fill the gap, targeting the sports community in the market. As Sri Lanka is a temperate country, oral rehydration solutions could grab
the market whereas everyone who feels thirsty from dehydration could consume an isotonic beverage for quick rehydration.

This particular study suggests two formulations of isotonic beverages as synthetic and natural, targeting to fill up the market gap identified in sports beverages in Sri Lanka. Natural formula is a novel product to the Sri Lankan market to satisfy the community which seeks for natural and healthy products. Country's desiccated coconut industry waste: an isotonic sports beverage made from coconut waste is utilized. Both formulas adhere to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) guidelines for their constituents
