Restoring essential education infrastructure after Cyclone Ditwah

For the first time in the 75-year history of the University of Peradeniya, Cyclone Ditwah caused a major flood event. The cyclone fully inundated the teaching and soil microbiology laboratories of the Department of Soil Science, including a culture collection of beneficial soil microorganisms, island-wide soil collection, laboratory equipment and consumables. This facility was heavily used to train more than 800 undergraduates annually. The safety assessment revealed that the building is no longer usable thus urgent reconstruction is recommended. We are in the process of recovering the damage, which accounts for 104 million rupees. The department is receiving financial and other support from the alumni and other well-wishers.
