The ATM 1: English I course

The ATM 1: English I course is offered as a supplementary course to the students of the faculty of Agriculture prior to commencing their academic programme. Coordinated by Ms. Nirmani Perera

The English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers an intensive 120-hour residential course in English for students, at the Mahailluppallama sub-campus, to improve their language skills. The course is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that will enable students to achieve a high level of proficiency in English.

The intended learning outcomes of the course are as follows:
• Use sentence patterns (Transitive, Intransitive, Complementary and Passive) and grammar structures along with improvement of vocabulary: Students will learn the different sentence patterns and grammar structures, along with improving their vocabulary. This will help them to communicate more effectively and accurately in English.
• Compose sentence structures in scientific texts (definitions, descriptions, classifications): Students will learn how to compose sentence structures in scientific texts, such as definitions, descriptions, and classifications. This will enable them to write scientific reports and papers in English.
• Summarise texts of general and subject topics: Students will learn how to summarise texts of general and subject topics, which will help them to understand and communicate complex information in a concise manner.
• Skim and scan simple texts: Students will learn how to skim and scan simple texts, which is a valuable skill for academic research and reading comprehension.
• Express opinions on various topics and discuss: Students will learn how to express their opinions on various topics and engage in discussions with others. This will help them to develop critical thinking and communication skills.
• Introduce oneself and others: Students will learn how to introduce themselves and others in different contexts, which is an essential skill for social and professional settings.
• Participate in role plays, dialogues, and make informal speeches: Students will participate in role plays, dialogues, and informal speeches, which will help them to develop their conversational and presentation skills.
• Make formal and general presentations: Students will learn how to make formal and general presentations, which is an important skill for academic and professional settings.
• Improving interaction and presentation skills by participating in a Variety Entertainment Programme: As a part of the course, students will participate in a Variety Entertainment Programme, which will provide them with opportunities to improve their interaction and presentation skills while having fun.

The course is designed to be intensive and immersive, providing students with ample opportunities to practise and improve their English language skills. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate effectively in a variety of settings and contexts.
