"Agriculture Education” is a mainstay in the secondary and tertiary education system of Sri Lanka, which serves as the bridge between agricultural science and the other disciplines and involves application in real settings. The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, is the premiere institution responsible for the Agricultural Higher Education of Sri Lanka. The Faculty, during its past 63 years has significantly contributed to the upliftment of the Agricultural Education at the tertiary education system of the country. It has nurtured all other six Faculties of Agriculture that exist in the University system of Sri Lanka in terms of academic training, progress monitoring and curriculum development.
In addition, the Faculty was also actively involved in development of curricular, training school teachers in relevant subject areas, conducting seminars and workshops for school children, students, and setting, moderation and correction of national level competitive examinations. Most of these activities are performed on the invitation of Department of Examinations and National Institute of Education, and carried out in an ad hoc manner. In real terms, these activities require a well coordinated mechanism, if further success is to be achieved in producing well-trained human resources required by the nation.
To achieve this objective, the Faculty of Agriculture identified the establishment of an Agricultural Education Unit (AEU) under the Faculty Corporate Plan 2004-2008 (under objective 6.2 – To influence public opinion on matters of national importance). The Council of University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, has approved the proposal and the AEU was established in 2007 at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.
