Teaching Areas:

  • I teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in Environmental microbiology and co-teach courses in soil fertility, research techniques in soil science, and land degradation and conservation.

Research Interests:

  • Understand the effects of agricultural practices on soil microbial communities using tools in microbial ecology and genomics
  • Study the effects of soil microbial community dynamics on nitrogen use efficiency in rice systems
  • Improve carbon sequestration in marginal agricultural soils in Sri Lanka

    • Teaching experience:
    • Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Peradeniya since 2007
    • Teaching assistant in Crop and Soil Science Department, Cornell University from 2008-2010
    • Group leader of the “Biophysical environment” sub-group in the Student Multidisciplinary Applied Research Team (SMART) of the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD), visited South Africa (2010)
    • Research experience:
    • Studies on rice rhizosphere microbial communities using molecular techniques (PLFA, T-RFLP and real-time PCR techniques) and conventional tools in microbial ecology
    • Studies on microbial communities in peat soils and agricultural soils using T-RFLP
