Duminda was born in 1984 in Ampara, the eastern province of Sri Lanka. He received his primary education at Saddhathissa Vidyalaya and completed secondary education at D.S. Senanayake College, Ampara. He received his BSc from the faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 2009. After graduation, he was recruited to the Department of Soil science as a Temporary Lecturer. After completing his master's in Environmental soil science, he joined the Coconut Research Institute as a Research Officer in soil science in 2012. Duminda re-joined the Department of soil science as a lecturer (probationary) in August 2013. Duminda is curious about the way water moves and stores in soils which is critical for crop growth and transport of pollutants. His research mainly focuses on 1) Studying spatial and temporal dynamics of soil water and related hydrological processes and their controls at different spatial (soil core to the field) and temporal (e.g. diurnal to annual) scales in agricultural and natural ecosystems. 2) Developing low-cost sensing techniques to measure soil water content at point & field scales. 3) Developing automated irrigated systems by integrating soil water dynamics information & low-cost soil water sensors.
