The Department of Agricultural Biology is an ideal learning environment, driven by a close-knit group of academics, researches, and students. Covering both the theoretical and applied aspects of disciplines related to Agricultural Biology, we offer to shape the next-generation of young minds to launch in to a career in biological sciences and beyond.
The program provides knowledge and extensive hands-on training on biological sciences related laboratory and field work. The students are provided with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with acclaimed research undertaken in relevant disciplines, with access to modern equipment and facilities, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The Department offers four modules for the advanced program of Agricultural Technology & Management degree, covering key areas of Agricultural Biology. Through the advanced modules the students will be groomed for their prospective postgraduate studies and future professions.
Advanced modules offered:
Entomology is an important area in Agricultural production, Agricultural Environment Management and Agriculture related industries. Research and development, and extension activities in Entomology are active in major government departments, research institutes, universities, pesticide related companies and national and international organizations demanding trained and skilled personnel. Hence, this advanced module is designed to produce graduates who are able to fulfill this urgent and continuous need. The courses in the advanced module in Economic and Applied Entomology have been designed to provide introductory yet comprehensive knowledge and skills in Entomology and related study areas. Students will also be introduced to broad concepts of Agricultural Entomology and will be given the opportunity to apply them more specifically and in depth in the field.
Genetic improvement is one of the most important areas for increasing the productivity of crop plants. To meet the increasing demand for food of a growing population, knowledge and skills on plant genetic improvement is essential. The advanced module in Genetic Improvement of Plants is designed to incorporate the areas of Genetics and Breeding, Plant Physiology, Plant Biochemistry and Biodiversity. It also addresses the conventional and modern crop breeding strategies, environmental interactions and in vitro techniques for needed to implement more effective crop improvement programmes. Upon the completion of this module, the student will have the ability to effectively contribute to plant improvement programmes and development of new plant varieties.
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology is an important field with considerable future impact in agricultural technology and management. This module has been designed to equip the students with sound knowledge in Molecular Biology and hands-on-experience in relevant techniques. In addition, aspects of recombinant DNA technology, biosafety, bioprospecting and their applications in the industry at a global level will be addressed, with emphasis on the prospects of practical usage of biotechnology in Sri Lanka. Upon the completion of this module the students will be able to apply various methods used in molecular biology and biotechnology to meet the future demand of the industry.
Food and agricultural sector in Sri Lanka needs professionals trained in disease management with a sound background in microbiology to meet the demands stipulated by F.A.O. and W.H.O. for the industry. The advanced module in Plant Pathology and Microbiology is designed to provide a sound knowledge on the basic principals relating to molecular and cellular biology of plant pathogens and beneficial microorganisms, as well as their impacts on other organisms and their environment. In addition, the students will have proficiency in laboratory and communication skills. It is envisaged that a student upon completion of this advanced module will be able to acquire and articulate specialized knowledge and skills relevant to plant diseases and microorganisms and the ability to apply them to solve problems and contemporary issues in Plant Pathology and Microbiology.

At the Department of Agricultural Biology our students are encouraged to venture beyond the limits defined by the academic programme. The students are given the opportunity to develop their soft skills and attitudes through various activities organized over the year.
Each year the biology majoring students organize a student orientation welcoming the new. The orientation not only mark the induction to the Department, but also is the first Department event in which the students get the true feeling of becoming a member of the “Biology family”.
“Happy hour” is where the all biology majors get-together along with the academic staff members. During the hour the students are guided through a course of self-discovery to realization of the opportunities that awaits beyond the university life. Some of the activities includes realizing the strengths/weaknesses within an individual, how to showcase the positive and get around the negative, career guidance, CV writing and mock interviews, all done in a stimulative but friendly setup.
The Biology Guild is the major platform of the biology majoring students to explore avenues outside the class room. It is a dynamic student society, dedicated to improve the undergraduate experience through organization of various, educational and extra-curricular activities.Biology Guild Facebook Page
