The Agricultural biotechnologynology Center, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya was established through the in 2003 Asian Development Bank (ADB)-sponsored Science and Technology Personal Development Project (S&TPDP) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Sri Lanka. It commended activities on 2nd May 2003 and was formally declared open on 20th September 2003.The incubation period for developing the Centre was two years and it was only sufficient for commissioning and conducting training programmes. The infrastructure, equipment, instruments and facilities were supplied through ADB S & TPD Project. The ADB S & TPD Project terminated on 31st September 2004. At present a Director and the Dean Faculty of Agriculture who is the chairmen of the Management Committee of the centre are administrating AgBC.
To be a Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Biotechnology for research and outreach activities in Sri Lanka and the region.
To implement training and research in biotechnology based on national priorities and to serve as an outreach and service centre for national research and educational institutes as well as the private sector organizations, so as to serve the overall needs of the country and the region.
The techniques involved in Biotechnology research and development are common to both plants and animal and the scope can be widened to include multidisciplinary research activities in Biotechnology such as agriculture , medical dental aquaculture livestock forestry environment indigenous medicines pharmaceuticals industry etc.
