Workshop on Fake News by Agriculture Faculty Journalism and Media Society
The workshop “Fighting against Fake News” which was organized by the Agriculture Faculty Journalism and Media Society (AFJM) of the University of Peradeniya was held on 05th March 2020 at Animal Science Auditorium. This was a joint effort of AFJM together with Sri Lanka Development Journalism Forum (SDJF) and The Centre for Media and Information Literacy (CMIL) in collaboration with NewseumED. The keynote speaker was Ms. Jessi McCarthy, an outreach educator of NewsuemED. The event held successfully with the participation of Prof. D.K.N.G. Pushpakumara, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Peradeniya as the chief guest, and around one hundred participants from The Faculty of Law, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Fine Arts and Department of Philosophy including both lecturers and students.
The workshop was an interactive session by Ms. Jessi McCarthy discussing some examples related to fake news in a real-world context, the proper way of identifying fake news from biased news and flawed news and ESCAPE fake news. One interesting question made by Jessi McCarthy was “Why do fake news go viral” which was also answered in detail by herself. Most important thing is that this paved the way for participants to think about the effect of fake news on society. A discussion was held between the speaker and the participants at the later part of the workshop which allowed students to clarify their misconceptions related to news in social media and share their views on fake news.
The media partners for the event were the media unit of Department of Agriculture Extension and Perabeats, media club of the University of Peradeniya.
