Faculty of Agriculture - University of Peradeniya

Research

  •  Provide research facilities in agricultural biotechnology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  •  Promote basic and applied research of high quality.
  •  Build capacity for innovative research.
  •  Ensure a cadre of competent and committed research staff and an effective administrative, technical and support staff.
  •  Provide opportunities for local scientists to carry out ‘in service’ short term and long term research activities relevant to their institutions.
  •  Purchase books, journals, software necessary for research and to maintain and provide access to relevant databases and internet facilities.
  •  Establish a broad research agenda to develop biotechnological approaches that will benefit many sectors in Sri Lanka, principally, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, livestock, environment and industry.
  •  Focus on client-oriented research that will ultimately benefit the producers, processors, manufacturers and exporters of agricultural produce and products.
  •   Establish linkages with other laboratories conducting biotechnology research in the country, region and globally.
  •   Develop industry-linked research.
  •   Undertake joint research projects on selected areas.
  •   Act as the nodal point for collaborative R&D activities between research institutes and universities whilst establishing a national network of personnel and institutions involved with biotechnology.
  •   Establish formal contacts with national bodies responsible for providing funds for biotechnology and related research such as NSF, CARP and NRC so that prioritized research of national importance can be undertaken.
  •   Establish formal contacts with international bodies that fund biotechnological research such as ICGEB, FAO etc.
  •   Establish links with laboratories of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS). While the Centre will be required to undertake strategic research, the link laboratories will undertake downstream-applied research that is required by respective institutions. Linkages with international institutions, especially of the region, will expand the scientific capacity of the Centre.
  •   Establish linkages with industry. It will enable scientists in the relevant industries to work on specific projects useful to their respective industries. It will provide opportunities to its scientists to work in the industries on short-term basis so as to transfer relevant techniques to the industry.
  •   Provide a multidisciplinary environment for the training of the critical mass of S&ampT personnel in biotechnology R&D activities in Sri Lanka.
  •   Contribute towards undergraduate and postgraduate training programs by providing teachers, laboratory facilities, and up-to-date information with links to international databases. The Centre will provide ‘hands’ on training in order to develop the skills of the students in various techniques available.
  •   Hold workshops/training programs in biotechnology and related disciplines for local scientists and for those in the region.
  •   Provide opportunities to staff to acquire new techniques from centers of excellence abroad and to enable them to transfer these techniques to local scientists and institutions
  •   Provide training to technical staff in the various techniques involved in biotechnology.
  •   Disseminate knowledge to a wider scientific community.
  •   Conduct seminars and workshops on themes of interest to the public.
  •   Conduct seminars and workshops for the scientific community of the country and the region.
  •   Design and carry out short-term certification coursers to generate income.
  •   Hold national and international conferences in biotechnology and related disciplines and publish the proceedings.
  •   Invite specialist research fellows from around the world to carry out short-term research programs, to enable the transfer of ‘state of the art’ knowledge/techniques, and to interact and plan future activities.
  •   Provide consultancy services to industry and R&D institutions.
