Agricultural Biotechnology Centre, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya (AgBC) was established to facilitate and strengthen research, capacity building and generate marketable products through exploitation of molecular biology and biotechnology. It is important to note that AgBC is the only institution of its kind devoted to Agricultural Biotechnology in Sri Lanka. AgBC operates under the guidance of Dean Faculty of Agriculture and a full-time Director, who is also a senior lecturer attached to the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.
The Agricultural Biotechnology Center, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya was established through the in 2003 Asian Development Bank (ADB)-sponsored Science and Technology Personal Development Project (S&TPDP) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Sri Lanka. It commended activities on 2nd May 2003 and was formally declared open on 20th September 2003. The incubation period for developing the Centre was two years and it was only sufficient for commissioning and conducting training programs. The infrastructure, equipment, instruments and facilities were supplied through ADB S & TPD Project. The ADB S & TPD Project terminated on 31st September 2004.
