Dean's Message

Welcome to the most dynamic Faculty of Agriculture in Sri Lanka.

Welcome to the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.

The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya is the pioneer institute responsible for higher education in Agriculture in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest, largest and the most dynamic Faculty of Agriculture in the country. The Faculty presently offers three degree programs which are of 4-year duration: B.Sc. Agricultural Technology & Management (39B), B.Sc. Food Science & Technology (35B) and B.Sc. Animal Science & Fisheries (89B). The total annual student intake to the Faculty through the UGC is 300.

The Faculty also accommodates for special provision and foreign students. All the academic programs offered by the Faculty are designed according to a semester-based course unit system. The medium of instruction at the Faculty is English.

The Faculty, at present consists of eight departments of studies. To support the academic programs as well as the outreach activities, the Faculty has established Agriculture Education Unit, Agriculture Bio-technology Centre, Agribusiness Centre and Teaching Methods Unit. The Faculty is capable of providing a sound practical training in Agriculture through its Livestock Farm at Mawela, Udaperadeniya, Meewathura Farm at Peradeniya, Experimental Station at Dodangolla and Sub-campus at Mahailluppallama. The latter offers practical training in agriculture during one whole semester including community based learning.

To ensure the high quality of the training offered by the Faculty, the Faculty is equipped with 119 permanent academic staff and 250 academic support staff. The Faculty has a strong academic staff with 89 members holding Ph.D.s from world famous leading universities, of which about 50 % are full Professors.

The unique feature of our graduates is that they fit a wider range of disciplines because of the multi-disciplinary nature of our academic programs. In addition to subject matter knowledge, our students obtain a balanced training in communication skills, computer & IT skills and life skills development (critical thinking, problem solving, team work, leadership skills, and ethnic harmony) to meet the needs of the modern society. Our students have immense opportunities to get involved in social and welfare activities through various student societies as well as through events conducted by the Faculty. To assist our students during their course of studies at the Faculty, the Faculty also offers formal advisory and counselling programs, financial assistance for needy students and many other benefits. The intellectual environment that is essential for any University is further strengthened by the existence of eight other faculties (Arts, Allied Health Sciences, Dental, Engineering, Management, Medicine, Science, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science) which closely interact with each other in many activities.

We live in the Faculty as one family, thus, creating a better environment for studying and learning. Owing to the unique training we offer our students, our graduates always dominate in the job market and do not find difficulty in finding employment; in fact 95% of our graduates are employed everywhere in the country and abroad, almost in all the sectors of society.

Together with the staff of the Faculty, I extend an invitation to those interested in finding information about the Faculty to explore our website.

I would be happy to answer any queries you may have.
