The herbarium of University Sub Campus Mahailuppallama maintains 1000+ plant specimens. This is a unique facility as its main focus is on agriculturally important plant species. Its role is therefore supplementary to the Sri Lanka National Herbarium.
The collection was developed over the years through the contributions of students. Classes of resident students at the Sub Campus actively participate in frequent updates.
Specimens include widely grown crops; traditional and indigenous crops; agriculturally important weeds; invasive alien plant species; underutilized plant species; crop wild relatives, and, dry zone forest trees. Specimens of released and recommended varieties of crops by Sri Lanka Department of Agriculture enhance the uniqueness of this herbarium.
Primary reason for establishment of this resource is to provide skills of plant identification for undergraduate of the Faculty of Agriculture. This facility also provides educational support to students of schools around the Sib Campus.
